Who We Are

We've begun our new unit Who We Are.  Our central idea is: Pre-judging can lead to misconceptions.  We spent time thinking about our key concepts (Reflection and Perspective) and our related concept (Stereotyping).  We watched a video called ‘Smiling Indians’ as a provocation to introduce the concept of stereotyping.

We have unpacked this central idea and rewritten it in kid friendly language and our mother tongue to help us better understand.

We also brainstormed the many ways people get prejudged.  Chiho summarized our discussion by concluding that, “People can get prejudged for any reason at all.”  Our discussions later in the unit will focus on how disabled people are prejudged and we have already had 2 guest speakers talk to the fourth grade about their experiences in this area.  Mrs. Haessler told us about having polio as a teenager and how it affects her still today.  Mr. Phil told us about working with children who have disabilities.  Listening to these speakers has initiated a lot of classroom discussion.
