Friday Update

• The children have chosen to either share their Literacy Journal or POI journal with you over the weekend.  Please take time to have a conversation about their work.  The journals need to be returned on Monday as we use them everyday!

• FRACTIONS AND DECIMALS CHALLENGE – In math we have started our unit on fractions and decimals.  We are thinking about how ‘fractions and decimals are ways of representing part-whole relationships.’  We are trying to find many examples of how fractions, decimals and percentages are used in real life.  We have thought of:

- following recipes

- baking with measuring cups

- sharing food (we talked about sharing pizza, a sandwich, cake and chocolate bars in fractional parts as well as sharing a group of items like cookies and cupcakes)

- cutting up paper into fractional parts

- shopping – money – cents are decimals

If you can, please discuss this list at home, and see if you can find real examples for a class display (i.e. photos/ receipts/ labels/ measuring cups, etc…)

·        We have continued working on our unit ‘Who We Are.’  We are looking at our inquiry points, which are:

o       Assumptions that are made about people with disabilities

o       The ways prejudging affects people’s lives

We have started to read short biographies about people who interest us.  We are making connections between their stories and our central idea.  Next week, we will teach a classmate about what we have found out.
